Peter Maynich, 93, Lifelong Yonkers Resident
YONKERS, N.Y. — Lifelong Yonkers resident Peter Maynich died Tuesday, May 10. He was 93.
A native of Smirkovic, Poland, Maynich narrowly escaped Nazi invasion at age 15, becoming a helmsman in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Maynich was the owner and operator of the Riverdale Valley Bar & Restaurant for 28 years with his wife, Mary "Mae," Zagursky.
He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church.

MAMARONECK, N.Y. — Mamaroneck resident Gabriele Vitro died Wednesday, May 11. He was 105.
Vitro is survived by his daughter, Felicia DiFolco and her husband Frank; son, John Vitro; daughter, Marie Pace and her husband Peter; son, Joseph Vitro and his wife Alice; son, Anthony Vitro and his wife Anne; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. — Chappaqua resident Thomas Joseph O'Connell died Tuesday, May 10. He was 71.
He spent his life working as an attorney and had a great passion for the law.
O'Connell is survived by his wife, Patricia A. O'Connell; his son, Thomas J. O'Connell Jr., and his wife Allison R. O'Connell and was soon to become a grandfather.

YONKERS, N.Y. — Yonkers resident Aida Di Salvo died Thursday, May 12. She was 90.
Di Salvo is survived by her daughter, Josephine and her husband Beniamino De Feo; son, Tony and his wife Deborah Di Salvo; grandchildren, Paul and Dino De Feo, AnnaMaria Ruggiere and Marc and Danielle Di Salvo; and six great-grandchildren.
Di Salvo was predeceased by her husband, Carmine.

John S. Whearty, 82, Retired Westchester Schools Superintendent
VALHALLA, N.Y. — Valhalla resident John S. Whearty died on Thursday, May 12. He was 82.
He was born on April 17, 1934 to James and Gertrude Whearty in Glen Cove, N.Y.
Whearty was the first principal of Westlake High School, starting in the fall of 1962 before later becoming Superintendent of Schools of the Mount Pleasant Central School District, retiring after 34 years of service in 1996.
He was a member of the Valhalla United Methodist Church, the Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club, Mt. Pleasant Community Theater and various professional Organizations.

A native of Bagnara Calabra, Italy, Luciano was employed as a sales representative for Syms of Paramus for many years.

NORTH ARLINGTON, N.J. — Longtime North Arlington resident Laura A. Puma Fernandez died Wednesday, May 11. She was 71.
A New York native, Fernandez lived in Long Island before moving to North Arlington 50 years ago.
She performed clerical work for the Bound Company in Fairfield for eight years before retiring nine years ago.
Previously, she worked at the Century Glove Company in Newark for 20 years.
