Tropical Storm Erika Could Hit Florida As Hurricane The National Weather Service has issued an update for Tropical Storm Erika and warns that it could develop into hurricane strength by the time it reaches Florida. According to the NWS storm watch website, Erika may strike Florida by 2 a.m. Saturday. The storm is producing heavy rain over portions of the Leeward Islands, which will spread over the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico today. Total rainfall accumulations will be 4 to 8 inches, with maximum amounts of 12 inches, which could produce flash floods and mud slides in those areas. Fairfield Holding Hazardous Waste Collection At Veterans Park FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The annual household hazardous waste collection for Fairfield will be held Saturday, Aug. 29 at Veterans Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fairfield is a member of HazWaste Central. Since May 1990, towns and cities in the group have recycled and disposed of more than a million gallons of waste. Volunteers will be needed from 8:30  to 11:30 am and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help with collection but will not be handling hazardous waste. The mayor and council amended the noise ordinance last month to add time limits, which will impose state guidelines during the overnight period, according to NorthJersey.com. The 2005 nuisance noise law didn’t specify hours, making enforcement impossible. Consuelo Carpenter, who worked in several administrative positions, is claiming town officials fired her because she supported former Mayor Tito Jackson in the last election, according to the website.
