Janis Joplin's 'Mercedes Benz' Debuted 45 Years Ago In Port Chester PORT CHESTER, N.Y.-- Drafted during a poetry jam in a Port Chester bar with songwriter-pal Bob Neuwirth, Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" was created on accident, according to The Wall Street Journal. Shortly after the song was written in August 1970, Joplin decided to perform the song during her performance at the Capitol Theatre, according to The Wall Street Journal. Just days before her death in October 1970, she was recording her album "Pearl" when she began singing the song in the studio for fun. After her death, the song was added to the album, according to The Wall Street Journal. …

Dorothy Lillian Bassi, 89, Of Mamaroneck MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Dorothy Lillian Bassi (nee Kusanke), of Mamaroneck, died on July 11, 2015. She was 89. She was born on Dec. 22, 1925 in the Bronx to Otto and Wilhelmina Kusanke. Bassi is survived by her daughters, Lina (Carl) Calarco; Marie (Kevin) Ryder; Gaeann (Jim) Bianco; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Armand Bassi and her sister, Florence Cato. She was born on March 19, 1940 to Martin L. and Arlene G. Ball in Yonkers, where she was raised, and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. Maskara worked as a bookkeeper for a private accounting firm in Westchester for over 40 years. On April 8, 1961 she married George Maskara in Sacred Heart Church; he died in 2008. She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart, a former parish trustee and was a volunteer and supporter of the North Yonkers Boys & Girls Club. She is survived …
