Mount Vernon Businessman Fatally Shoots Himself MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A Mount Vernon business owner who ran a custom sneaker company fatally shot himself on Friday afternoon, reported News 12 Westchester. Ken Silverman, 73, the owner of American Orthopedics, shot himself at the company warehouse on South Fourth Avenue about 2 p.m. Friday, according to News 12. Employees were in the building at the time, according to News 12. American Orthopedics' clientele includes veterans, diabetics and celebrities like 50 Cent, according to News 12. Route 22 Motorist Had Suspended License, Putnam Sheriff Says PUTNAM, N.Y. – The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said a motorist stopped Aug. 30 on Route 22 in the Town of Patterson had a suspended license. Deputy Sheriff Matthew Tunney said he stopped Carrie Beth Hernandez, 32, after she committed a traffic violation, and subsequently discovered she had a suspended license. She was charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor. Hernandez was released on her own recognizance and was ordered to appear Sept. 14 in Patterson Justice Court.

$24K Handbag Robbery Suspect Is Apprehended By Bedford Police BEDFORD, N.Y. – A Brooklyn resident accused of stealing more than $24,000 of high-end handbags from a Bedford store was arrested at his home on Friday by Bedford police. DeShawn Davis, 40, is the main suspect in the robbery of four handbags valued at $24,030 from a boutique along Route 117 on Aug. 19. Davis was charged with third-degree grand larceny by police. He is a suspect in other robberies in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The four handbags have not yet been recovered.

Former Scarsdale Superintendent Thomas Sobol Dies SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Thomas Sobol, former superintendent of the Scarsdale School District, died at his home on Thursday at the age of 83, the New York Times reported. Sobol ran Scarsdale schools from 1971 to 1987. He left the position to be the state's Education Commissioner for eight years, noted the Times.
