Columbus Elementary School Collects Toys For The Holidays MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. -- Students at Columbus Elementary School will spread some holiday cheer this season thanks to a toy drive that collected nearly 150 toys, games and crafts. Columbus Elementary partnered with Ossining Children's Center to provide toys to underprivileged children 12 and under. Connie Cotrone, guidance counselor at Columbus, and center volunteer Stacey Winnick organized the drive. The school holds a toy drive every December.

Music, Songs Fill The Night At Tuckahoe Middle School Winter Concert EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Tuckahoe Middle School held its winter concert on Dec. 17.  A packed house turned out to see the school's chorus, band and strings/orchestra perform. More than half of the school participated.  Sandy Garufi, Edie Reidy Fernandez and Charles DuChateau prepared the students for the performance.

Hillcrest Elementary Students Participate In Hour Of Code PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Hillcrest Elementary students recently participated in an "Hour of Code" in celebration of National Computer Science Week. Students learned about computer coding through the popular game of Minecraft as an example.  They were surprised at how easily they were able to create games and graphics using computer coding and enjoyed learning the new skill. Students in more than 180 countries participated in the Hour of Code initiative.

Sherman Weightlifter Gets Probation In Federal Steroids Case SHERMAN, Conn. -- A 32-year-old Sherman man was sentenced Wednesday to three years of probation for his role in a steroid manufacturing and distribution ring, said Deirdre Daly, U.S. Attorney for Connecticut.  U.S. District Judge Robert Chatigny also ordered Michael D. Mase to spend his first three months of probation in home confinement, pay a $2,000 fine and perform 120 hours of community service. Mase, a registered nurse and a competitive weightlifter, purchased anabolic steroids from former Newtown police Sgt. Steven Santucci and distributed them to athletes who competed in bodybuilding…

Somers High Event Showcases Talented Tuskers SOMERS, N.Y. -- Somers High School will stage "Tuskers Got Talent" on Friday, Jan. 8. Students will showcase their musical, dancing, juggling and other skills to compete for the title of "Most Talented Tusker."  Tickets are available in the Commons during lunch for $10 or for $12 at the event.  The competition will take place in the school's auditorium from 7-10 p.m.

Posillipo Community Center in Rye Brook was evacuated after the carbon monoxide detector began sounding Wednesday morning, according to Hudson Valley News 12.  One resident and one employee were inside the center when the carbon monoxide detector began sounding about 9 a.m., Hudson Valley News 12 reported.  Firefighters reportedly found high levels of carbon monoxide on the scene.
