Evelyn J. Betas, 69, Bridgeport Resident BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Longtime Bridgeport resident Evelyn J. Betas died Monday, April 25. She was 69. Born in Krakovany Czechoslovakia, Betas was a Bridgeport and Trumbull resident for more than 60 years. She was a former care provider for T.L.C. where she worked for over 12 years. She was a supporter of Save the Children and the A.S.P.C.A.  Betas is survived by her son Erik Betas and wife Teresa of Torrington, grandsons Ryan and Branden Betas both of Bridgeport, brother Josef Kloc and several nieces and nephews. National Babe Ruth Day is April 27 in honor of George Herman "Babe" Ruth Jr. Ruth, who's known mostly for his time with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, retired as baseball's all-time home run king with 714 home runs before ultimately being surpassed by Hank Aaron and later Barry Bonds.  He became one of the first five players elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. The Maryland native died on Aug. 16, 1948 at the age of 53.

He was 66.He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on Aug. 3, 1949 to Joseph and Josephine (Creddo) Magdon. He was a graduate of Fairfield University and worked as a teacher, administrator and coach at Fairfield Prep. After beginning as an assistant football coach, Magdon became head coach at Fairfield Prep and finished with a record of 96-69-2, including a victory against Cheshire High School in 1996 to end that school's 49-game winning streak. New Yonkers Family Court Officially Opens YONKERS, N.Y. — The new Yonkers Family Court Facility is open at 131 Warburton Avenue in Yonkers, approximately half a mile from the old court. The move is expected to save county taxpayers $14 million in operating costs compared to the previous facility over the course of 20 years. Tri-Area Students Facing Greater Competition For College Enrollment With the importance of a college degree continuing to rise, more students in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are submitting applications to multiple colleges and universities, according to the New York Times. Students utilizing the Common Application — one application that's completed online and able to be submitted to multiple schools — rose to 920,000 through mid-April, compared with 847,000 at the same time last year, according to the New York Times.
